Founded in 1909 in Azabu Juban, Tokyo, Naniwaya Sohonten is a long-established business that is said to have been the first to sell taiyaki in Japan. The founder, Mr. Seijiro Kobe, was influenced by Western confections of the time, but devised a shape and flavor that was familiar to Japanese people, and invented a baked sweet in the shape of a sea bream. At the time, the shape of the sea bream was considered auspicious, and it quickly gained popularity. This is considered to be the original taiyaki, and it became a well-known specialty of Azabu Juban.
Naniwaya Sohonten’s taiyaki are made in the traditional way called “Itcho Yaki,” which has been used since the establishment of the company. It is a time-consuming and labor-intensive process, as each taiyaki is individually baked by artisans in iron molds. The taiyaki has a crispy, savory outside and is filled with a rich, sweet, homemade bean paste inside, giving it a unique texture and flavor. Unlike most mass-produced taiyakis, the bakery has maintained the unique handmade flavor and aroma of its taiyakis by baking them in a single baking pan without using mechanized equipment.
In the Showa period (1926-1989), the song “Oyoge! Taiyaki-kun” became a big hit during the Showa period (1926-1989), and Naniwaya Sohonten became even more famous as a result. As the “original” of the Taiyaki world, Naniwaya Sohonten was featured in many media and became a popular spot visited by tourists from far and wide. Even today, it is so loved by many people that it is not unusual to see lines of people standing in line to get in.
In addition, Naniwaya Sohonten has been experimenting with new challenges while maintaining its traditional taste. In recent years, in addition to taiyaki, Naniwaya Sohonten has also offered a menu of original sweets such as ice cream monaka and taiyaki with apricots, which have been highly praised by locals and tourists alike. It is a famous restaurant that combines both old and new challenges.
